Starting Personal Training as a Complete Beginner: What to Expect (And Why It’s Not as Scary as You Think)

personal trainer for beginners north london

So you’re thinking about personal training but you’re not sure where to start. Maybe you're a total beginner and you’ve never set foot in a gym. Maybe you tried once, hated it, and quietly vowed never to return. Maybe you’ve Googled “personal trainer North London” at 11pm, closed the tab, and told yourself you’d do it properly next time.

You’re not alone.

The majority of people I’ve worked with over 17 years said exactly the same thing before their first session.

They weren’t sure they were “ready.” They worried they’d look foolish.

They were worried that they’d be too unfit to even begin, or that some loud, intimidating trainer would make them feel worse about themselves than when they walked in.

That’s not what personal training should feel like. And if you’re reading this, I want to walk you through exactly what starting out actually looks like.

  1. You Don’t Need to Be Fit to Start

This is the one I hear most often: “I need to get a bit fitter before I see a personal trainer.”

It genuinely makes me smile every time, because it’s completely back to front.

Personal training exists precisely for people who are at the beginning. You don’t arrive fit, you arrive as you are, and the whole point is that we build from there, together.

When a new client walks into my studio, I’m not assessing whether they’re up to scratch. I’m figuring out where they’re starting from so I can design a programme that actually works for them.

Everyone is a beginner at some point and has to start somewhere. Some of my best client transformations - people who’ve lost 16kg, gained 20kg of muscle, gone from barely lifting the bar to bench pressing 70kg - started with almost zero fitness base!

  1. Your First Session Is a Conversation

Your first session with me, which is just £40, isn’t a fitness test you can fail. It’s a chance for both of us to figure out if this is a good fit.

We’ll talk about your goals. What does “getting in shape” actually mean to you? More energy? Weight loss? Building some muscle? Feeling more confident in your body? All of those are valid, and each one shapes a different approach.

We’ll have a look at where you are physically, not in a humiliating way, just enough to understand your baseline. And then we’ll actually train. You’ll leave having done something real, with a feel for how I work and what the personal training sessions are like.

No sales pitch and no pressure to commit to a package before you’ve had time to think. It's an honest hour to help you decide whether this is right for you.

  1. A Private Personal Training Studio Changes Everything

One of the main reasons people avoid gyms and by extension, personal training, is the environment. The blaring music, the crowded floor, the feeling of being watched and judged by people who look like they’ve never had a bad training day in their lives. If you're a gym beginner, its a total nightmare and even if you're not a beginner, its not that great at the gym either.

My personal training studio in Arnos Grove is nothing like that.

It’s private. It’s just you and me. It's personal training for beginners.

The music is calm, think smooth chill radio rather than thumping bass. The lighting is low. There’s no audience, no locker room bravado, no one clocking your every move.

I built it this way partly because I needed it too. After years of working in commercial gyms across London, I found that environment exhausting - the noise, the culture, the atmosphere that made me feel like I had to perform just by being there.

When I started training from my private studio, everything changed. For me, and for my clients.

If you’ve ever felt out of place in a gym, that feeling usually disappears here within the first few minutes.

  1. Everything Is Tailored to You

Generic programmes don’t work. The plan that gets results for a 25-year-old training for aesthetics is completely different from what works for a 45-year-old rebuilding after a back injury, or someone returning to training after years away.

Every client I work with gets a programme built around them: their goals, their schedule, their physical starting point, their diet, their lifestyle. Nothing is off the shelf.

This extends to nutrition too. Whether you eat plants only, are mostly vegetarian, or are a committed omnivore, I’ll work with what you actually eat, not what some textbook says you should eat.

As a vegan myself with 17 years of personal training experience, I’ve supported clients across the full range of diets, and I know how to help each person make small, effective changes that get real results.

5. Results Are Real But They Take Time..

I want to be honest with you here, because too much of the fitness industry isn’t.

You will not transform your body in four weeks. Anyone promising that is selling you something. Real, sustainable transformation, the kind that sticks, takes months of consistent training, gradually progressive programmes, and nutrition habits that actually work in your real life.

What I can tell you is that it happens. Clients who started with me unable to do a single press-up are now training independently, confident and strong.

People who came to me with 20kg to lose did exactly that and not through crash diets or extreme programmes, but through steady, methodical work over time.

The difference personal training makes isn’t magic but its accountability, expertise, and a programme that’s designed for you specifically. That combination works in a way that going it alone rarely does.

  1. You'll Leave Each Session Feeling Better Than When You Walked In

This sounds simple, but it matters enormously. A good personal training session should leave you feeling energised and motivated and not beaten up, humiliated, and dreading the next one.

Effort is non-negotiable. You’ll work hard. But there’s a world of difference between pushing yourself in a safe, supported environment and being shouted at by someone who mistakes aggression for coaching.

My clients regularly tell me that the sessions are the best part of their week. Not because it’s easy - because it isn’t, but because the environment is supportive, the progress is visible, and they feel genuinely good about themselves by the end.

That’s what training should feel like.

Ready to Take the First Step?

If you’re in North London and you’ve been putting this off, the easiest thing you can do right now is send me a message. Your first session is just £40, it covers a consultation, an assessment of where you are, and a real training session. No pressure to continue.

If you’re further afield, I also offer online 1-2-1 personal training via video call, with the same approach and the same level of personalisation.
